But beyond that, He promised, "I will come to you." At Jesus' baptism, the Spirit had descended on Him like a dove. They will receive the answers to their prayers directly from the Father. As it is for a woman in childbirth, so it will be for the disciples. The reason Jesus can say this is that the truth which the Spirit is teaching is the truth which He hears from our Lord. He moves in immediately, without delay, the moment you believe in Jesus. Some people think they have to search for the Holy Spirit, but He dwells in every believer. They will experience great sorrow because of the death of Jesus, but they will see Him again, raised from the dead. Christians should therefore seek to be filled with the Spirit on a continual basis. We live at a time when we do not yet fully know all that God has in store for us and for the future. Finally, God gave them a child in a miraculous way, glorifying Himself and bringing about good for Abraham and Sarah. Verse 26 says that the Spirit teaches "all things." We cannot miss Jesus' clear statement here that the proof of genuine love for Him is obedience to His commands (a subject I explain in great depth in my book The Gospel According to Jesus [Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1988, 1994]). I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. When the academic minds of Jesus' day came to their conclusion about who He was, their pronouncement was that He was from the devil (Matthew 12:24). "All things" is used here in a relative sense. If they were taught all they needed to know, then there is no need for further revelation.
